オリンピックが終わり、来週後半からお盆が始まります。お盆を過ぎるあたりから、少しずつ夏の終わりを感じることが多くなりますね。
特に私の生まれ育った藤沢では、お盆を過ぎると海水浴場にクラゲが出るので、地元の子供たちはお盆を境に海に行かなくなります。と言っても私の子供の頃の話で今はどうか分かりませんが。
ところで、今から37年前、私が高校2年生の頃の話になりますが、高校の夏休みの始まりとともに、海水浴場の海の家で1ヶ月半近くバイトをしたことがありました。
まだ海水浴のお客さんが来る前の朝早い時間にバイト先の海の家に着くと、先ずは掃除から仕事ははじまり、そのあとは貸しパラソルを並べ、時には、食堂で出している料理の仕込みも手伝いました。お客さんを入れる時間になると、基本は呼び込みの仕事になります。私のような無愛想な人間をよく海の家のオーナーは雇ったものですが、上手く呼び込みができていたかの記憶は定かではありません。
中学生の時の一つ上の女子の先輩とペアで呼び込みをしていたので、地元の真っ黒の日焼けした高校生男女が、うちわを持ちながら呼び込みをしているので、それはそれなりに様になっていたのかもしれません。
海の家のオーナーは、海の家の運営だけでなくて、海水浴用品の卸しの仕事をしていたので、毎週、息子さんの運転する軽トラで、鎌倉から、逗子、葉山、三浦海岸まで海水浴用品の配達をする仕事も経験させてもらいました。
真夏の太陽が照りつける海岸線を窓を全開にした軽トラで、江ノ島方面から鎌倉方面に向かい、海水浴を楽しんでいる家族やカップルを横目に、おでこから汗が滴らないようにタオルを巻き、荷台から海水用品の入った段ボールを海の家まで運びます。初めて労働というものを経験して自分でお金を稼いだ高校2年生の夏。もう40年近くも昔のことなのに、今でもきらきらした記憶として残っています。
そういえば、一緒にアルバイトをしていた先輩ですが、バイトを途中で辞めることになったのですが、辞める前に、実は映画のオーディションに受かったので、映画の撮影に参加するためにバイトを辞めると打ち明けれくれました。なんと、富田靖子さんがデビューしたアイコ16歳という映画で、主人公を演じる富田靖子さんの親友役で出演したのでした。なんか青春ですね。

The Olympics are over and Obon will begin in the latter half of next week.
After Obon, I start to feel the end of summer little by little.
Especially in Fujisawa, where I was born and raised, the local children stop going to the beach after Obon because jellyfish appear at the beaches after Obon. I don’t know if this is true now, but it was true when I was a child.
By the way, 37 years ago, when I was a sophomore in high school, I worked part-time at a beach house for about a month and a half at the beginning of my high school summer vacation.
When I arrived at the beach house early in the morning before the bathers arrived, I started my work by cleaning the beach, then I helped to arrange the rental parasols, and sometimes I also helped to prepare the food served in the cafeteria. When it was time to let the guests in, my job was basically to call them in.
I don’t know how the owner of the beach house could have hired such an unsociable person like me, but I don’t remember if I was able to attract people well.
I was working as a pair with a senior girl from junior high school, so it might have been quite a sight to see local black and tanned high school boys and girls holding fans and calling for people.
The owner of the beach house was not only running the beach house, but also working as a wholesaler of bathing goods, so I had the opportunity to experience delivering bathing goods from Kamakura to Zushi, Hayama, and Miura coasts every week in a light truck driven by his son. We drove along the coastline in the mid-summer sun with the windows open all the way from Enoshima to Kamakura, passing families and couples enjoying the sea, wrapping towels around us to keep the sweat from dripping down our foreheads, and carrying cardboard boxes filled with beach supplies from the back of the truck to the beach house. It was the summer of my sophomore year in high school when I first experienced labor and earned my own money. It was almost 40 years ago, but it still remains as a glittering memory.
By the way, one of my seniors who was working part-time with me had to quit her part-time job in the middle of the summer, but before she quit, she told me that she had actually passed an audition for a movie and she was quitting her part-time job in order to participate in the filming of the movie.
What a surprise, she played the role of the best friend of Yasuko Tomita, who played the main character in the movie called Aiko 16 years old, in which Yasuko Tomita made her debut. What a youth!
オリンピックでの選手達の活躍を見ていたら、何故か高校生の時の海の家のアルバイトの体験を思い出しました。
