“making a dent in the universe”
上の引用は、Steve Jobs氏が、1985年にPlayboy誌のインタビュー記事で語った言葉ですが、後に、Steveの数ある名言の中でも特に注目される言葉になりました。
“dent”という単語は、…をくぼませる、へこませるという意味なので、直訳としては、宇宙にくぼみをつくることぐらいの大きな影響や変化を与えるという意味になります。
実際のインタビューで語った内容は、Appleで働いている社員に対して、それくらいの大きな野望を持って仕事をすることが大切で、また、自分がそれくらいの大きなことをやってのけることができるという信念を持つことの重要性を説いた言葉だそうです。
私自身は、宇宙と言わず、世の中や社会を変えるくらいの風穴を開けたり、自分が存在したという印を残すというような大望は持っていませんが、ただ、今の自分に満足しないで、昨日よりも今日、今日よりも明日、最高の自分になれるよう努力して過去の自分を超えていきたいという願望は持っています。
宇宙という領域の中で、唯一普遍なことは自分自身だと思っています。自分自身を信じて、自分自身を楽しんで、自分自身にチャレンジして、時には後退してもいいので、少しづつ前に進んで行きたいと思います。

“making a dent in the universe”
The above quote was said by Steve Jobs in a 1985 interview with Playboy magazine, but it later became one of Steve’s most notable quotes of all time.
“The word ‘dent’ is … So the literal translation is that it means to make an impact or change in the universe as big as making a dent in it.
What he said in the actual interview was that he told the employees at Apple about the importance of working with ambitions that big and having faith that you can do something as big as that.
I myself don’t have ambitions that are so great that I don’t say the universe, that I can open up a windfall that will change the world or society, or leave a mark that I existed, but just the desire to not be satisfied with who I am now, but to strive to be the best I can be, today rather than yesterday, tomorrow rather than today, and to surpass my past self has.
I believe that the only thing that is universal in the realm of the universe is myself. I want to believe in myself, enjoy myself, challenge myself, and move forward a little at a time, even if it means retreating at times.
