エコノミスト誌の最新号に、ソーラージオエンジニアリングが地球温暖化防止の解決策になり得る可能性が紹介されていました。興味深かったので、図解にまとめてみました。
ソーラージオエンジニアリングとは？
- 地球を照らす太陽光の量を人為的に操作することで温暖化をコントロールする方法。
- 技術的に実現可能であり、Co2排出削減にかかるであろう時間と比べても短期間で温暖化を止めることが期待できるので、その可能性に注目が集まっています。
成層圏エアロゾル噴射
- エアロゾルと呼ばれる反射する小さな粒子を大気上層部に噴射して地球を冷やす方法
海洋雲の増光
- 海塩を使って海洋状の雲の形成を促進して、その地域の太陽光を反射させて温度を下げる方法
リスクと不確実性技術的に実現可能、直接的なコストも安価だと見られているものの、問題点も指摘されているようです。
- モラルハザード … この技術がCo2排出削減を遅らせたり、低炭素経済への移行をやめたりする口実になってしまう。
- ガバナンス … 科学的な不確実性や潜在的なリスクが多いため、ジオエンジニアリング実験を規制するための国際的なフレームワークを作ることが先決。
人為的に天候を操作するなど一昔前ではSFでしか聞かない話でしたが、私たちが想像できることはテクノロジーにより多くのことが可能な世の中になってきました。
但し、自然を人為的に操作することに対しては、論理的、環境的、地政学的にも反対する声は多く、軍事目的で使われる可能性も否定できません。
それでも、地球の環境破壊を食い止めて未来の世代に繋いでいくためにも、私たちはテクノロジーを正しく使い、性善説に立ってまずは小規模な大気実験を行うことに賛同していくべではないでしょうか。

The latest issue of The Economist magazine introduced the possibility that solar geoengineering could be a solution to prevent global warming.
I found it interesting, so I summarized it in an illustration.
What is solar geoengineering?
- A method to control global warming by artificially manipulating the amount of sunlight that illuminates the earth.
- It is technically feasible and is expected to stop global warming in a short period of time compared to the time it would take to reduce Co2 emissions, so it is attracting a lot of attention for its potential.
Stratospheric aerosol injection
- A method of cooling the Earth by spraying small, reflective particles called aerosols into the upper atmosphere.
Oceanic cloud intensification
- A method of using sea salt to promote the formation of oceanshaped clouds to reflect sunlight off the area and lower the temperature.
Risks and Uncertainties
While the technology is seen as technically feasible and inexpensive in terms of direct costs, there are some problems that have been pointed out.
- Moral hazard … the technology could be used as an excuse to delay Co2 emission reductions or stop the transition to a low-carbon economy.
- Governance … The first priority is to create an international framework to regulate geoengineering experiments because of the many scientific uncertainties and potential risks.
A long time ago, artificially manipulating the weather was something we only heard about in science fiction, but we live in a world where technology allows us to do many things we can only imagine.
However, there are many logical, environmental, and geopolitical objections to the artificial manipulation of nature, and the possibility of its use for military purposes cannot be denied.
Nevertheless, in order to stop the destruction of the earth’s environment and to pass it on to future generations, we should use technology correctly and support the idea of conducting small-scale atmospheric experiments from the standpoint of good nature.
子供の頃にSFで見た世界が、テクノロジーにより実現できることが多くなってきました。このテクノロジーと人類の叡智を、地球規模の問題である気候危機や持続可能性開発に使っていけばまだ地球の未来に希望を持てるのではないでしょうか。
