大学生の時に友達の影響でヨーロッパの車に憧れていたことがありました。当時、二玄社という出版社から刊行されていた、Car Graphic とNAVIという車雑誌を読んでエンスーを気取って、やっぱり車のデザインは古いヨーロッパ車に限るなどと一人悦に入っていたのでした。
その頃に、出会った言葉に、
日本人には一生かかっても、フェラーリのようなデザインは描けない。日本のように、全ての教科で平均点をとるような教育をしていたら、トヨタのような可もなく不可もなしの車しかデザインできないのだという言葉に共鳴したのを覚えています。
80年代後半の話ですので、まだ日本車もヨーロッパ車に追いつけの精神で頑張っていた時期だったのでご容赦ください。
何でこんなお話をしたかというと、義務教育での、誰も落ちこぼれにしないという教育方針は、日本人全体の教育を一定のレベルに保つためには間違っていないと思うのですが、大人になってからは、自分の個性を出していくこと、自分の得意なことを極めていくことがとても大事だと思ったからです。
バブルが弾けて30年以上経ち、終身雇用や年功序列も崩壊した今、周りや先輩の目を気にせずに、同調圧力も気にせずに、自分を際立たせること、自分の個性を磨くことに集中することで、もっともっと輝いている大人、楽しそうな大人、魅力的な大人が出てくるのではないでしょうか。
日本人が今後フェラーリのような車をデザインできるかどうかは分かりませんが、日本にも大谷選手のように、それまでの常識を覆す若者が出てきました。今後、ビフォー大谷、アフター大谷のように世界を変えた男として語られることがくるかもしれませんね。
大谷選手はまだ27歳ですが、30代、40代でも遅くはないと思います。皆が率先して出る杭になるように努力していけば、日本は多種多様なタレントに溢れた国になっていくのではないかと信じています。まずは、率先して自分も出る杭になっていきたいと思います。

This was in the late 80’s, when Japanese cars were still trying to catch up with European cars, so please forgive me.
The reason why I am telling you this is because I believe that the educational policy of compulsory education, where no one is left behind, is not wrong in order to maintain a certain level of education for all Japanese people, but when you become an adult, it is very important to show your individuality and to master what you are good at.
Now that it has been more than 30 years since the bubble burst and lifetime employment and the seniority system have collapsed, I believe that we will see more and more shining, joyful, and attractive adults by concentrating on making ourselves stand out and developing our own individuality without worrying about the eyes of those around us and our seniors, and without worrying about peer pressure.
I don’t know if Japanese people will be able to design cars like Ferrari in the future, but there are young people in Japan who, like Otani, are overturning the conventional wisdom. In the future, he may be talked about as the man who changed the world, just like the Before Otani and After Otani.
伊達男を目指している自分としては、イタリア人のちょいワルオヤジに憧れてしまいます。
