年初から始めた洋書52 冊チャレンジも、ここまで順調で、現在は8冊目となる、”The Future is Asian: Order in the Twenty-First Centry” という本を読んでいます。
この本は、アジア圏が今後グローバルの中心になっていくことをアジアの歴史から、発展、予想を踏まえて詳しく書いている本なのですが、第一章の”世界の歴史：アジアからの視点” のところで躓いています。
歴史は学校で習ってきた基礎知識があるので問題はないかと思っていたのですが、歴史上の国や人物が全て英語になると、それまでは漢字とカタカナで慣れ親しんだ地名や人物が急にそれ何処、あなた誰ですかとなってしまうのです。
少し例をあげてみたいと思います。
Zhou Dynasty = 周王朝
Qin Dynasty = 秦王朝
Tang Dynasty = 唐王朝
Song Dynasty = 宋王朝
Ming Dynasty = 明王朝
Baekje Dynasty = 百済王朝
Yangtze = 揚子江
Sun Tzu = 孫子
Confucious = 孔子
Chang’an (Xi’an) = 長安(西安）
ということで、いつもよりページが進むスピードがだいぶ落ちてしまっていますが、よく考えると、アジアの世界史をもう一度体系的に学び直すのにこんなに良いチャンスはないのではないかと思い直すことになりました。
私の父は、生前趣味らしいものがない仕事人間でしたが、読書、特に歴史は大好きで、私が小学生高学年の時、つまり父が今の私と同じくらいの歳の時に、日本の歴史大全（全巻で12冊くらいはあるかなりのボリュームの本）を買って私に自慢をしていたのを覚えています。
歴史を学ぶことは人生に一番の教訓となると父は信じていたのだと思います。
さあ、今日も父のことを少し思い出したながら、アジアの歴史と発展を英語で学んでいくことにしましょう。

The 52-book challenge that I started at the beginning of this year is going well so far, and I am currently reading my eighth book, “The Future is Asian: Order in the Twenty-First Centry.
This book describes in detail how the Asian region will become the center of the global world in the future, based on Asian history, development, and predictions.
I thought there would be no problem since I have a basic knowledge of history from school, but when all the historical countries and people are written in English, the names of places and people that I had been familiar with in kanji and katakana suddenly become “where are you?
I would like to give you a few examples.

So, the pages are moving much slower than usual, but when I think about it, I have come to realize that there is no better time than now to systematically relearn the world history of Asia.
I remember that when I was in the upper grades of elementary school, that is, when he was about the same age as I am now, he bought the Complete History of Japan (a huge book with about 12 volumes) and bragged about it to me.
I think my father believed that learning history would be the best lesson for life.
So, with a little reminiscence of my father, let’s continue to learn about the history and development of Asia in English today.
