お笑い会の大御所、ダウンタウンの松本人志さんが、ある番組で、寝ても覚めても常にお笑いのことを考えていて、気がつくと頭の中で大喜利のシュミレーションをしているというようなことを仰っていました。また、夢の中でもコントを作っていることがあり、その時は身体は寝ているものの脳は休んでいないので休息できないという天才ならではの悩みを話していました。
要は、それくらいお笑いが好きで、また60歳近い年になっても、まだお笑いに貪欲であるということがこれまでの大成功を物語っているのだなと思いました。
お笑いという天職を若いうちに見つけた松本さんは稀なケースだとは思いますが、この自分の好きなことを本職としてお金を稼いでいくということは、一生かけてもチャレンジする価値はあるなと思っています。
実際にそれを実現できる人は少ないので、好きなことを仕事にすべきではないという言葉をよく耳にしますが、好きなことで食べて行けたら自分が世の中から認められているという証になりますし、そもそも本当に好きなことは職業にしなくてもやっているもの。その上でお金をいただけるのであればそれにこしたことはありません。
一生かけてもチャレンジする意味があると私が言っているのは、好きなことあっても、いきなりその道でプロを目指す必要はないと思いますし、そもそも20代そこらで就職するときは好きなものの対象も決まっていないことが殆どだと思います。
ただし、仕事をしながらも、自分の興味のあることや好きなものを10年、20年と続けて行けば、その中から淘汰されて本当に自分がやりたいことが自然と定まってくるのだと思っています。そして、それから自分が好きで続けてきたことで起業したり、独立することができるかを考えていくという方法もあるのではないでしょうか。
ここにくるまでに数十年時間をかけていれば、好きな気持ちは本物だと思いますし、何よりも時間の蓄積で誰よりも自分が得意なことになっているはずです。
私の場合は、その対象が英語で、これまでも英語を武器に外資系の会社員として生計を立ててきました。そして、これからは好きな英語で自分の力で稼いでいくことができるかをチャレンジしていきたいと思います。
ということで、50歳を過ぎてからの自分の挑戦にワクワクしています。

Mr. Hitoshi Matsumoto of Downtown, one of the biggest names in comedy, said on one of his shows that he is always thinking about comedy whether he is asleep or awake, and when he comes to, he is simulating a comedy act in his head. He also said that he sometimes creates comedy in his dreams, and that his body is asleep but his brain is not resting, so he can’t rest.
The point is that he loves comedy so much, and even at the age of almost 60, he still has an insatiable appetite for comedy, which I think explains his great success to date.
I think that Mr. Matsumoto is a rare case who found his calling in comedy at a young age, but I think that making money doing what you love as your main occupation is a challenge worth taking on for the rest of your life.
I often hear people say that you shouldn’t do what you love as a job because there are not many people who can actually do it, but if you can make a living doing what you love, it’s proof that you are recognized by the world. If you can get paid for it, there is nothing better than that.
The reason I say that it is worthwhile to challenge yourself even if it takes a lifetime is that even if you like something, you don’t have to suddenly aim to become a professional in that field, and most people don’t even know what they like when they start working in their 20s or so.
However, I believe that if you continue to do what you are interested in and like for 10 or 20 years while working, you will be able to weed out the things you like and naturally decide what you really want to do. Then, you can think about whether you can start your own business or become independent with what you have loved and continued to do.
If you have spent decades of time to get to this point, I believe that your love for it is genuine, and more importantly, the accumulation of time should make you better at it than anyone else.
In my case, that subject is English, and I have been making a living as a foreign-affiliated company employee using English as my weapon. And from now on, I would like to challenge myself to see if I can make money on my own with the English I love.
So, I am excited about my challenge after turning 50.
