I saw  Matsu-chan commenting to a TV show called ” Widenashow that if he were to be reborn, he would want to be “Sakanakun.” He said, “It sounds fun to be able to study only what you like all the time,” and I completely agree with him.

I remember once watching a TV program called Kinyo-no- Sumatachi, in which Sakanakun’s mother was featured  about how she raised her children, and I remember thinking to myself that it was because of her that Sakanakun is the person he is today.

I found that episode from that time on the web, so I’d like to share it with you.

One day after entering elementary school, one of my classmates drew a prank picture of an octopus in Sakana-kun’s notebook. The unique shape of the octopus intrigued Sakana-kun, who had never heard of the creature, and he repeatedly asked his mother to buy him a real octopus to look at. At first, instead of a whole octopus, he bought a small octopus that could fit in the palm of an adult’s hand. The octopus was so cute, he observed it through a magnifying glass, counting the number of suckers and doing his best to draw it. Seeing this, her mother decided to cherish her son’s curiosity, so they decided to go out to a fresh fish store together and buy some octopus. From then on, however, they bought so much octopus that octopus was on the dinner menu almost every day for a month.

Eventually, the mother wished she could show her son a real octopus swimming around, so they went to the aquarium together. There, Sakana-kun’s eyes were met with a myriad of colorful fish. He was particularly fond of the boxfish, which was struggling to swim with its small fins even when it bumped into a larger fish. It was the model for Sakana-kun’s hat, which is now his trademark.

My son’s mind had become obsessed with fish, so his mother would find a whole fish and present it to him, saying, “If you like fish, do a thorough study. She wanted to show him the real thing, not just an illustrated book, as he was learning so much about fish. She continued to give her son thorough support even after he reached junior high school, even going with him to fetch seawater to raise horseshoe crabs. Her mother describes her feelings at that time: “I thought that if there was anything I could do to help, even if it was just a little bit, I would be happy to do so.

The most important thing is to let him have the freedom to do what he wants to do,” says Sakana-kun’s mother. Her conviction as a mother who supported her son’s passion for fish has been praised on the internet, with people saying, “Sakanakun was amazing, but so was his mother…”, “His mother’s support is behind his success”, and “His mother is a genius because she is there for him.

What do you think?

Sakanakun’s mother’s education may not be something that everyone can copy, but she may be the best example of how to bring out the best in a child.
