”…… create one agency with responsibility for systemic stability over the major institutions and critical payment and settlement systems and activities.”

この一文、ガニングフォグインデックスの指数は、24という結果が出ました。言い換えると、この文章を理解するには、24年の教育年数が必要になるということだそうです。

一方で、この英文を次のように書き直してみましょう。

“Set up an agency that makes sure banks remain stable and follow the law.”

これだと、指数が8.5になり、小学生でも理解できるレベルになります。

それでは、次の例文を見てみましょう。

”Airlines may vary on their policies regarding advanced seating.”

この英文を、顧客の目線に立って、アクティブボイスに書き換えると

”Advance seating policies vary by airline.”

(English)

I’ve been reading a book called “The Effortless Experience” written by Matthew Dixon.

In the book, he presents a wealth of data and analysis on how to optimize customer service, and in the book, he introduces a tool called the Gunning Fog Index, which I found interesting.

The Gunning Fog Index (index) estimates the number of years of education required to read a certain English sentence. For example, an index of 12 would require the reading level of a U.S. high school student (approximately 18 years old).

Now I’d like to measure this with a specific statement.

The following statement was made by Timothy Geithner, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, in his speech to the U.S. Congress on legislative reform.

…… create one agency with responsibility for systemic stability over the major institutions and critical payment and settlement systems and activities

This one sentence, the Gunning Fog Index, resulted in an index of 24. In other words, it would take 24 years of education to understand this sentence.

On the other hand, let’s rewrite this sentence as follows

Set up an agency that makes sure banks remain stable and follow the law

This would give you an index of 8.5, which is a level that even elementary school students can understand.

Now let’s take a look at the following example sentence.

“Airlines may vary on their policies regarding advanced seating.”

This English sentence could be rewritten into an active voice from the customer’s point of view.

“Advance seating policies vary by airline”

The meaning is exactly the same.

Whether you are writing in English or Japanese, using an active voice is the most effective way to write passable sentences.

Active voice … It means that there is a subject in the sentence that acts on the verb.
Passive Voice … It means that the subject is on the receiving end of the verb’s action.

What do you think? Especially for those of us Japanese who speak English as a second language, the key to becoming a successful English speaker is to use this active voice, so please take a look at it.
