ジョン・ルイスという生き方

皆さんは、ジョン・ルイスという人物をご存知でしょうか。

1987年から2020年まで長きに渡り、アメリカのジョージア州選出の下院議員として活躍されていますが、彼を何よりも有名にしたのは、1960年代にアフリカ系アメリカ人の人権確立のために起こった公民権運動で、マーティン・ルーサー・キング牧師達と共に指導的な役割を果たしたからです。

私自身、彼の名前を知ったのは、今年の7月に膵臓癌で亡くなられた時に、メディアで取り上げられている記事を目にしたからですが、1960年代から60年あまりも、自由と平等のために活動し続けたその姿勢に共感を覚えました。

今、彼の伝記を読んでいるのですが、その中で紹介されているエピソードに感動したので共有させていただきます。

このエピソードは、彼が公民権運動を始めたばかりの20歳の時に、黒人差別者のグループに襲撃され怪我を負った時に駆けつけた警察官にか語った言葉です。

ルイスは警察にこう語りました。 “私たちは、人々がお互い愛し合えるようにここに来ています”。憎しみ”は、結果であって、問題ではありません。”憎しみを持って生まれてくる子供などいないでしょう。そう、ルイスは振り返りました。”すべての子供達は希望と愛、そして無邪気さを持って生まれてきます。問題なのは、今の世の中が、彼らに このような残忍な価値観を教える世界になっているからです。 ロックヒルの警察署長は、ルイスが加害者を告発をしないという決定を受け入れました。

私達は皆、何の邪悪な心も持たないで生まれてきました。ところが、両親や、周りの人間、そして社会をみて、彼らの価値観に自分を併せるようになるのだと思います。

そうした意味で、黒人の差別という、その当時は、それが当たり前だと考えていた大多数の人に対して、自由と平等のために60年以上も闘ってきた、ジョン・ルイスという生き方に感動を覚えました。

彼の精神は亡くなった後も、こうした形で、多くの人の魂を揺さぶっていくのだと思います。

Have you ever heard of John Lewis?

What made him more famous than anything else is that he played a leading role, along with Martin Luther King and others, in the civil rights movement for African-Americans in the 1960s. I knew his name myself.

When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in July of this year, I came to know his name because I saw an article about him in the media.

I am currently reading his biography, and I was moved by the episode introduced in it, so I would like to share it with you.

In this episode, when he was 20 years old and had just started his civil rights movement, he was attacked and injured by a group of racist black men.

Lewis told the police. “We’re here so that people will love each other.” The haters were the symptom, not the problem. “No child is born in hate,” Lewis recalled. “All children are born in hope, love, and innocence. It is a troubled world that teaches these vicious values.” The Rock Hill police captain accepted the decision not to move forward with charges.

We were all born with no evil in our hearts. I think we are all born with no evil in our hearts, but when we look at our parents, the people around us, and society, we begin to align ourselves with their values.

In this sense, I was moved by the life of John Lewis, who fought for freedom and equality for more than 60 years against the discrimination of blacks, which was considered normal by the majority of people at that time.

I believe that his spirit will continue to shake the souls of many people in this way even after his death.
