Neuroscientists used to say that the brain is determined at the age of three. After the age of three, the number of nerve cells in the brain continues to decrease.

It is true that the number of nerve cells in the brain decreases, but there are still a lot of unused and undeveloped nerve cells in the brain at any age.

The brain changes and grows throughout its life depending on how you use it, but if you don’t use it, it will continue to deteriorate, especially in your 50s.

So, how can we train our brain to become more active? I would like to introduce a few things from the book by Dr. Toshinori Kato, a medical doctor who runs the Brain School.

Training the Comprehension System
I recommend tidying and redecorating your room. This is to improve your understanding of space. It is also a good idea to imagine the mood and background of a stranger on the train. Just get away from the written word and look at nature.

Train your physical system
Sports are good, of course, but the easiest way is to walk. Cooking, karaoke, playing musical instruments, journaling, and drawing are also good ways to exercise. This is because when you use your hands and mouth, these brain areas work better. Playing a musical instrument is recommended because it uses multiple brain areas (motor, visual, and auditory) at the same time, and the brain areas work better together.

Train your visual system
Consciously look at the changes in nature such as sunrise, sunset, phases of the moon, position of the stars, weather, and scenery. Traveling and discovering new landscapes is also effective. Seeing works of art in museums can also help. This stimulates the right part of the visual system, which deals with non-verbal information.

Train your thinking system
It is effective to use methods that put stress on the brain. For example, deliberately try to lose a game of rock-paper-scissors. Make it an “absolutely no overtime day. Have someone else decide your holiday plans. Give up your Try quitting your favorite menu for ten days. The idea is to encourage new thoughts and actions by imposing some kind of “constraint” or “framework” on your conventional thoughts and actions.

Train your memory system
Review your diary or notebook at least once a week to remind yourself of what you have done. It is also effective to “declutter” (throw away things you don’t need). It is important to remember the past as you look at things and decide if they are necessary or unnecessary.
