今、Why Debateという本を読んでいます。
大学生の現役ディベーターや、高校や大学生の時、ナショナルディベート大会での入賞を経て社会人になっている方など総勢20人くらいの方のディベートに対する思い入れや、如何にディベートが彼らの人生を変えたかをエッセイという形で紹介した本です。
まず、何よりもアメリカという社会がディベートで成り立っている社会だということがよく分かります。
そして、高校生から、レベルの高いディベートに触れることができることに羨望の気持ちを抱きました。
私自身、仕事でほぼ毎日、海外の同僚と議論をしますが、英語の壁に加えて、そもそもディベートをする技術という面でも遅れを取っていると感じているところでした。
この本で一番印象に残ったのは、中国人の女性の方が寄稿したエッセイです。
彼女は西安の大学でディベートを学び初め（最初は中国語でのディベート）、それから英語ディベートに移行していきます。
そして中国でのディベート活動が認められ、学部を卒業した後、アメリカのアラスカにある大学院に、奨学金をもらい入学します。
アメリカに渡った当初は英語での授業についていくだけでも苦労されたそうですが、それでもアジア人は自分一人だけでの環境で、2年間で100以上のディベートトーナメントに参加したことで、卒業時には、アメリカ人ネイティブと英語の力では全くハンディを感じなくなったと書かれています。
この話から、とても勇気と感動をもらいました。
自分の故郷を離れ、学生生活全てをディベートに注いだ彼女、今は中国に戻り、大学で学生にディベートを教え、中国全土にディベートを普及する活動をされているそうです。
さて、私も大学院で勉強を始められるように今日も準備をしていきたいと思います。

I’m reading a book called Why Debate.
It’s a book of essays about debate and how debate has changed their lives, written by a total of about 20 people, including current debaters in college and people who have won prizes at national debate tournaments in high school and college.
First and foremost, the book makes it clear that American society is a society built on debate. I was also envious of the fact that high school students can be exposed to high level debate.
I myself debate with colleagues from overseas almost every day at work, and in addition to the English language barrier, I feel that I am lagging behind in terms of debate skills.
What impressed me the most in this book was an essay contributed by a Chinese woman. She started learning debate at a university in Xi’an (first in Chinese) and then moved on to English debate. Her debate activities in China were recognized, and after completing her undergraduate studies, she was awarded a scholarship to attend graduate school in Alaska, USA.
When he first arrived in the U.S., he had a hard time just keeping up with the English classes, but even so, he was the only Asian in the class, and he participated in over 100 debate tournaments in two years. This story is very encouraging and inspiring.
I was very encouraged and moved by this story. She left her hometown and devoted her entire student life to debate, and now she is back in China, teaching debate to students at universities and working to spread debate throughout China.
Now, I would like to prepare today so that I too can start my studies in graduate school.
