先日のブログ記事で書いた通りに、英語の勉強欲が上がってきたので、今までの集大成として英語の勉強を進めていきたいと思います。

エコノミスト誌のシャドーイング
英の政治経済雑誌であるエコノミスト誌は英語の勉強に最適だと思っています。私は、こちらのオンライン版を定期購読しているのですが、iPhoneやiPadなどで何処でも読めますし、何と言ってもすべの記事を音声で聞くことができるので、こちらを使いシャドーイングをしていきます。ここで聞ける英語はとても聴きやすいイギリス英語なので日本人には合っていると思っています。
読売新聞の社説の英訳
この勉強法は、英語を組み立てる力をどんどん増やしてくれます。その日の読売新聞の社説をひたすら英訳していきます。社説は記事の量もそんなに多くはないので、私の英語力だと30分くらいあれば一通り英訳ができます。英訳が終わったら、The Japan Newsという英語のサイトに前の日の読売新聞の社説の英訳記事が掲載されていますので、自分の英訳と比較して、自分が上手く訳せなかったところや、もっと適切な単語があれば参考にします。
洋書のリーディング
これは、もうひたすら好きな洋書を音読していくだけの勉強法です。今は、Stephen KingのTHE STANDという1,300ページもある小説を電子書籍で読んでいますが、自分の好きな本を英語で読める喜び。英語の勉強だけでなくストーリも楽しめるので、学校英語を卒業した人は是非チャレンジして欲しいですね。ちなみに、私は20代の頃は、自己啓発の本を英語で読みまくりました。最初のきっかけは、Napoleon Hill のThink and Grow RIchでしたが、自己啓発本の多くはplain Engli shで書かれているので英語学習者にはおすすめです。
私の場合、こうしてインプットした英語は、仕事を通してアウトプットすることで英語の力を実感することができるのですが、なかなか実際に英語を使う機会のない方もいらっしゃると思うので、そういう方は勇気を持って英語の勉強サークルのようなものに参加するのもいいかもしれませんね。
私自身も、ただ言うだけでなく、自分のレベルを引き上げてくれる環境に身を置くため自分が参加できるフォーラムやグループを探してみたいと思います。

Here’s how to study to become a master of English.
Shadowing the Economist magazine
I believe that the Economist magazine, a British political and economic magazine, is the best for studying English. I have a subscription to the online version of the magazine, and I can read it anywhere on my iPhone or iPad, and best of all, I can listen to all the articles in audio format, so I use it for shadowing. The English you can hear here is British English, which is very easy to listen to, so I think it is suitable for Japanese people.
English translation of an editorial from the Yomiuri Shimbun
This study method will help you increase your ability to construct English rapidly. I just translate the editorial of the day’s Yomiuri Shimbun into English. There are not many editorials in the paper, so with my English ability, I can do a full translation in about 30 minutes. When I have finished translating, I go to the Japan News website and compare my English translation with the previous day’s Yomiuri editorial.
Reading Western books
This is a study method where I just read aloud my favorite foreign books. I’m currently reading Stephen King’s THE STAND, a 1,300-page novel in e-book format, and it’s a joy to read my favorite books in English. Not only can I learn English, but I can also enjoy the story, so I would like those who have graduated from school English to try it. Incidentally, when I was in my twenties, I read a lot of self-help books in English. My first trigger was Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow RIch, but many self-help books are written in plain English, so I recommend them to English learners.
In my case, I can feel the power of English by outputting the English that I have input through my work, but I know that there are people who don’t have the opportunity to actually use English, so if you are one of those people, you might want to be brave and join an English study circle.
I myself would like to look for a forum or group that I can join in order to put myself in an environment where I can not only say things but also raise my level.
毎日6時間の英語のインプットを5年間続けると、およそ1万時間の積み上げになります。英語の達人レベルを目指すのであれば、これでも少ないかもしれませんがチャレンジしてみます。
