今年の始めに、2022年の目標の一つとして英書52冊チャレンジ、つまり毎週1冊のペースで英書を読んでいく誓いを立てました。
昨日3冊目が読み終わったのでここまでは順調に読み進められています。
3冊目に選んだのは、”1兆ドルコーチ – シリコンバレーのレジェンド ビル・キャンベルの成功の教え” という本でした。
この本は、ビル・キャンベル氏本人が書かれた本ではなく、ビル・キャンベル氏をメンターとして仰ぎ、元グーグル会長兼CEOだったエリック・シュミット氏と、同じくキャンベル氏の影響を受けたグーグルの社員が、ビル・キャンベル氏が如何にしてシルコンバレーで、”ザ・コーチ”として知られるようになったのか、彼の考えをまとめた貴重な書となります。
残念ながら、キャンベル氏は2016年に亡くなっています。
元々はカレッジフットボールでコーチとしてキャリアを始めたキャンベル氏は、その後ビジネスの世界に転身、数社を渡り歩いた後、Appleのマーケティング副社長になります。その後は、IT企業のCEOを務めたり、シリコンバレーのIT企業の経営者の相談役として顔が知られていくこととなります。
そして、ビルがサポートした面々がすごい人たちになっています。
Apple社のスティーブ・ジョブズ氏、グーグル社のラリー・ペイジ氏、セルゲイ・ブリン氏、エリック・シュミット氏、サンダー・ピチャイ氏、アマゾン社のジェフ・ベゾス氏、Twitter社のジャック・ドーシー氏に、Facebook社のシェリル・サンドバーグ氏と錚々たるメンツです。
ところで、私がこの本で一番感銘を受けたのは最後の章に書かれていた、What Next? の段落でした。eBayのCEOを退いた時、ジョン・ドナホー氏はまだ50代。次に何をすべきかを模索していたときに、ビルがアドバイスした一言が、
クリエイティブであれ！
50代以降は最もクリエイティブな時期であるはずです。経験という知恵があり、それを好きなところに自由に使うことができます
未来を心配して時間を無駄にしない！
セレンディピティ（偶然や幸運）に委ねること。人生のターニングポイントの多くは予測やコントロールはできないものです

At the beginning of this year, I made a pledge to read 52 English books as one of my goals for 2022, that is, to read one English book every week.
I finished the third book yesterday, so I’ve been reading well so far.
The third book I chose was called “The One Trillion Dollar Coach – Success Lessons from Silicon Valley Legend Bill Campbell.
This book was not written by Bill Campbell himself, but by Eric Schmidt, the former Chairman and CEO of Google, who looked up to Bill Campbell as a mentor, and Google employees who were also influenced by Campbell, to explain how Bill Campbell became known as “The Coach” in Silicon Valley.
Unfortunately, Mr. Campbell passed away in 2016.
He started his career as a college football coach, then moved into the business world, working for several companies before becoming vice president of marketing at Apple. After that, he became known as the CEO of an IT company and as a consultant to the executives of IT companies in Silicon Valley.
And the people Bill has supported have become amazing people.
Steve Jobs of Apple, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Eric Schmidt, and Sundar Pichai of Google, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Jack Dorsey of Twitter, and Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook. The list goes on and on.
By the way, what impressed me the most in this book was the paragraph in the last chapter, “What Next?” When John Donahoe retired as CEO of eBay, he was still in his 50s. When John Donahoe retired as CEO of eBay, he was still in his 50’s. When he was looking for what to do next, Bill gave him a piece of advice.
Be creative!
Your fifties and beyond should be your most creative years. You have the wisdom of experience, and you are free to use it wherever you want!
Don’t waste your time worrying about the future!
Leave it to serendipity (chance or good luck). Many of life’s turning points cannot be predicted or controlled!
