(English)

I have worked for foreign-affiliated companies for more than 30 years, although I have also changed jobs since I joined a foreign-affiliated company as a new graduate.

Therefore, I have always used English at work and have been able to continue studying English even after entering the workforce.

And now, my desire to sublimate English to my life’s work as my purpose in life is growing stronger by the day.

I believe that studying English never ends and that I can still get better, but since I have been using and studying English at work for more than 30 years, I am not at the level where I can suddenly improve my English.

So there is no visible improvement, but I still feel renewed to spend more time in contact with English every day.

As part of my daily routine, I read

Listening to audio articles from the digital version of The Economist magazine.

I also read English books selected in the 52 English Books Challenge I set up at the beginning of the year.

In addition to these two routines, I have decided to watch a daily debate on an Internet site called Intelligence Squared Debate.

This site has been featured on this blog before, so I would like to excerpt an article from that time.

“The site is run by a non-profit organization called the Intelligence Squared US Foundation. On a variety of topics, including world affairs, culture, science, and domestic issues in the U.S., the site invites experts with global expertise in the field to debate, dividing the participants into pro- and anti-debate teams on the subject. Before the debate, the audiences are asked to fill out a questionnaire for their approval or disapproval, and then again after the debate, so that the team with the most votes before and after the debate wins.

And the great thing about this site is that all the debates are transcribed in writing, so I think it is a treasure trove for English learners to study English.

Also, the level of the debates is so high that it not only stimulates my intellectual curiosity, but also motivates me to want to one day debate in English like that myself.

Each debate is about an hour long, which is quite a lot, but I can manage to keep up with it because of the scripts.”

Since it takes an hour to listen to one debate, I calculate that if I combine my English reading with my listening to The Economist magazine, which I have already adopted, I will be studying English for more than three hours every day.

These three hours are more than I can spend on anything else. That is why I can say that English is my purpose in life.

Now, I will study English well today.
