社会人になって30年が経ちますが、新卒で入ったのも、また、転職した先の会社も外資系の企業です。
新卒で外資系の会社の選んだ理由は、仕事で英語を使えてイメージも良さそうという軽い気持ちからでした。
そんな軽い気持ちから決めた就職でしたが、結果、外資系の会社を選んで大正解でした。
外資系の会社は、転職で入ってくる人も多く、そもそも先輩・後輩という考え方があまりありません。そのため、上下関係が厳しくなく自由な社風が私にはピッタリだったのです。
また、多くの日本企業が取り入れている年功序列のシステムではなく、外資系は基本実力主義なので、仕事で成果を出せば、どんどん責任のある仕事を任せられ、給料も上がっていくことにとてもやりがいを感じられました。
そして何よりも自分に取ってベストな環境であったのは、常に自分をスキルアップしていかないと生き残っていけないと危機感を持てたことです。最初の会社に入社して数年たった時に、リストラのために早期希望退職者プログラムが導入されて、上司や周りの同僚がどんどん辞めていくの見て、何処に行ってもやって行けるようにスキルは常に磨いていかなければならないと思ったものです。
ということで、社会人になって30年ずっと英語の勉強を続けてこれたのは、英語が好きだからという理由に加えて、英語を武器にして食べて行こうという気持ちが常にあったからだと思っています。
私の場合は、英語が、自分の好きなことであり、得意なことにすることができたので、その掛け合わせで市場価値が生まれた訳です。
そして、最近思うことに、そもそも好きなことを見つけるには、興味のあることや、やってみたいと思ったことにどんどんチャレンジしてみることが大切ではないかということが挙げられます。
色々なことをやってみることで、それは好きなことになり得るのかが分かってきますし、好きなことにすることができれば、自然とそれは得意なことにもなっていくのではないかなと考えています。
ということで、私の場合、英語のように、好きで得意なことを増やすべく、ブログを始めて、マラソンを目指し、ギターでいつか弾き語りライブができるようにチャレンジしていますが、まだまだ他にもやってみたいことがあるので、このブログでその奮闘記を書いていきたいと思っています。

I have been working for 30 years now, and both the company I graduated from and the company I changed jobs to are foreign-affiliated companies.
The reason why I chose to work for a foreign company as a new graduate was because I thought I could use English in my work and the company seemed to have a good image.
It was such a light-hearted decision, but it turned out to be a great decision.
In foreign-affiliated companies, there are many people who change jobs, and there is not much of a concept of seniority and juniority to begin with. Therefore, the free corporate culture with no strict hierarchy was perfect for me.
Also, instead of the seniority-based system that many Japanese companies use, foreign companies are basically merit-based, so if I could produce results in my work, I would be entrusted with more and more responsibility and my salary would increase.
What made the environment best for me above all was that I had a sense of urgency that I needed to constantly improve my skills to survive. A few years after I joined my first company, they introduced an early voluntary retirement program for restructuring, and when I saw my bosses and colleagues around me quitting rapidly, I knew that I had to keep improving my skills so that I could make it wherever I went.
This is why I have been able to continue studying English for the past 30 years, not only because I love English, but also because I have always had the desire to use English as a weapon to make a living.
In my case, I was able to make English into something that I liked and was good at, and the combination of the two created a market value for me.

So, in my case, in order to increase the number of things I like and am good at, like English, I have started a blog, I am aiming to run a marathon, and I am trying to play the guitar so that I can give a live performance someday, but there are still other things I want to try, and I would like to write about my struggles on this blog.
