娘の中学校で、朝授業が始まる前に読書の時間があり、一年通して各自読みたい本を読むそうです。
ということで、昨日は実家に寄り、本棚から自分が中学生くらいの時に読んだであろう本を数冊ピックアップして娘に手渡しました。
本好きの父の影響と、一人っ子だったこともあり、小学生高学年の頃から本を読み始め、中学、高校の頃は本の虫になり、推理小説から、純文学、青春ものとさまざまなジャンルの本を読んでいました。
今、思うとこの頃にひたすら本を読んでいたことが自分の国語力の基礎をつけてくれたと思っています。また、このブログも含めて何か書くことが好きなのも、読書を通して大量の言葉をインプットしてきたことが土台となっています。
そして、社会人になって英語の勉強に力を入れるようになった時も、読む、書く、話す、聞くの言葉の四つの技能のうち、一番力を入れてきたのが、とにかく大量の英文を読むこと。その次に聞くこと。このインプット重視の勉強法により、外資系の会社で英語を武器に戦ってくることができたと思っています。
このインプット重視の勉強法は語学の勉強は、例えばスポーツの練習でひたすらルーティンをこなしていくことにも通じているのではないかと思っています。
やはり、自分の頭と体の中に染み込ませるためには、大量のインプットが必要になりますし、その分野で一流になるには、最低10,000時間のインプットが必要と言われるのも納得です。
そして、10,000時間のインプットを続けるためには、好きなものでないと続けることは難しいですよね。私の場合、読書好きになったのは、ホームズやポアロなどの推理小説にハマったこと。それがいつの間にか英語の原書で楽しみたいに変わり英語の勉強を続けることができました。
つまり私にとって、推理小説を読むのも、推理小説を英語で読むのもどちらも本当に好きなこと。なので10,000時間も私にとってはあっという間なのでした。

At my daughter’s middle school, they have a reading period before morning classes start and each student reads a book they want to read throughout the year.
So yesterday, I stopped by my parents’ house and picked up a few books from the bookshelf that I would have read when I was in junior high school and handed them to my daughter.
Because of my father’s love of books and the fact that I was an only child, I started reading books in my upper elementary school years and became a bookworm in junior high and high school, reading a variety of genres, from mystery novels to pure literature and coming-of-age stories.
Looking back now, I believe that the fact that I was reading books so much during those years helped me build the foundation of my Japanese language skills. Also, my love of writing, including this blog, is based on the large amount of words I have input through reading.
And when I became a working adult and began to focus on studying English, of the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, I put the most effort into reading large amounts of English texts anyway. Next is listening. I believe that this input-oriented study method has enabled me to compete in foreign-affiliated companies using English as a weapon.
I believe that this input-oriented study method is similar to the way that language study is similar to the way that you practice a sport, for example, by performing a routine.
After all, a large amount of input is necessary to immerse oneself in one’s head and body, and I am convinced that it is said that at least 10,000 hours of input is required to become a top-notch person in one’s field.
And in order to keep up with 10,000 hours of input, it has to be something you love, otherwise it is difficult to keep up. In my case, my love of reading started when I got hooked on Holmes, Poirot, and other mystery novels. Before I knew it, that changed to wanting to enjoy them in their original English language form, and I was able to continue studying English.
In other words, for me, reading mystery novels and reading mystery novels in English are both things I really like. So the 10,000 hours flew by for me.
