This morning after an early morning 20 km run, I came to the city gym to watch my daughter’s table tennis team’s rookie tournament.

I guessed that about 20 schools in total had gathered there.

They are all junior high school students, so I felt refreshed just watching them.

From what I saw at the practice, they are all very good, and it doesn’t look like my daughter will have much of a chance to win the game, but I hope it will be a good memory for her.

For the past two years, I have been meeting regularly with my father’s band of four classmates from elementary and junior high school, and I often think back to 40 years ago when I was in junior high school.

If I were to say something to the person I was then, I would tell him that he will experience a lot of things in the future, and that although he will have a lot of problems and will encounter difficulties, nothing in life is wasted, and that the more he overcomes his problems and difficulties, the more he will grow and his life will turn out the way he wants it to be.

What I can say with certainty now is that if you think about life over a long span of time, there is no such thing as a failure. It may take time, but if you have a goal or purpose for the future and work toward it, I believe that at that point, you are a success. It is not whether or not you have reached your destination, but rather the fact that you are continuing to work toward it that makes it worthwhile.

When I was young, I didn’t understand these things, so I felt like I was fighting against some vague anxiety or some unknowable enemy, but now that I have more experience, I know that the most important thing is not the result but whether I can continue to enjoy the process.

It will soon be my daughter’s turn to compete and I will concentrate on cheering her on.
