Ta-Nehisi Coates (タナハシ・コーツ）氏の、Between the World and Me という本を読了したのでレビューしてみたいと思います。
タナハシ・コーツ氏は、ブラックアメリカンのジャーナリス及び作家で、2016年のタイム誌が選ぶ世界で最も影響力のある100人に選ばれています。
今回レビューする本は全米図書賞を受賞しており、今最も注目されている作家の一人になります。
Between the World and Me (邦題:世界と僕のあいだに）は、当時39歳だったコーツ氏が、14歳の息子への手紙というスタイルをとり、国民の自由と平等を掲げるアメリカ社会における、黒人迫害の闇を描き、また黒人としてどう生きていくべきかを息子に教えています。
この作品を通して、作品を象徴する内容になっているのが、プリンス・ジョーンズ (著者の大学時代の友人）の警察官による射殺事件があります。事件の内容を少し紹介してみます。
2000年、25歳のプリンス・ジョーンズ氏は、婚約者を訪ねるために車でバージニア州北部に向かっていました。その車を尾行していたPG群の警察官に射殺されました。この事件に目撃者はいませんでしたが、警察官の証言では、警察官が、ジョーンズ氏の車を止めて身分証明書の提示を求めたところ、ジョーンズ氏が自分の車を警官の車に向けて突っ込んできたため発砲したと主張しています。因みに、警察官は、ジョーンズ氏を、当時囮捜査をしていたドラッグディーラーと間違えて尾行し、結果殺してしまったことを証言しています。
コーツ氏は、この不条理な死を、この本を通して、黒人がこれまでに受けてきた差別や迫害の象徴として語りかけています。非常に重い内容で、軽く読める作品ではありませんが、何故アメリカで、今、BLM (Black Live Matter)が大きなモーブメントになっているのか少し理解できた気がしました。
本の中で、コーツ氏自身が、PG群の警察官に車を止められたエピソードを話すくだりがあるのですが、その時に彼の頭にフラッシュバックしたのは、警察官に殺されたこれまでの犠牲者たち。そして、警察官が自分の身分証明書を照合している間は、恐怖しか感じなかったと書いています。
日本という国に住んでいると、なかなか想像がつかないことですが、世界を見渡すと、自由や平等という権利を掴むために生きている人たちがいると言うことを教えてもらった気がします。

I would like to review the book Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Tanahashi Coates is a Black American journalist and author who has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2016. The book I am reviewing has won the National Book Award, making him one of the most sought-after authors of our time.
In Between the World and Me, Coates, then 39 years old, writes in the style of a letter to his 14-year-old son about the persecution of black people in an American society that stands for national freedom and equality.It depicts darkness and teaches my son how to live as a black man.
Throughout the book, the iconic shooting of Prince Jones (the author’s college friend) by a police officer has become an emblematic part of the work.
Let me tell you a little about the incident.
In 2000, 25-year-old Prince Jones was driving to Northern Virginia to visit his fiancée. He was shot and killed by a PG county police officer who was following the car. There were no witnesses to the incident, but the officer testified that the officer allegedly stopped Mr. Jones’ car and asked for his identification, and then opened fire as Mr. Jones drove his car into the officer’s car. The officer testified that he mistook Mr. Jones for a drug dealer who was working undercover at the time and followed him, killing him as a result.
Throughout the book, Coates speaks of this absurd death as a symbol of the discrimination and persecution that blacks have suffered throughout their lives. It is a very heavy book and not a light read, but it did help me to understand a little bit why BLM (Black Live Matter) has become such a huge movement in America today.
In the book, there’s a part where Coates himself tells a story about being pulled over by a PG group of police officers, and what flashed through his mind were all the victims who had been killed by the police. He wrote that he felt nothing but fear while the policemen were checking his identity card.
It’s hard to imagine living in a country like Japan, but when I look around the world, I feel like I’ve been taught that there are people who live to grab the rights of freedom and equality.
