高校生の時に、植村直己さんの著作 ”青春を山に賭けて” を読んで、植村さんの大ファンになりました。
植村さんの冒険家としての生き方に、当時多感な年頃だった私は、こんな人生もあるのかと憧れてしまった訳です。
植村さんは、1984年にマッキンリーに単独登頂をして下山中に消息不明となり帰らぬ人となってしまいます。
当時16歳だった私は、マッキンリーで消息をたった植村さんの知らせをTVやニュースで見て、関心を持ち、前述の本を読むことになるのですが、この本の初版は1971年に出されています。
この本では、植村さんの生い立ちから、大学で山岳部に入り山にのめり込んでいったエピソード、日本を出てヨーロッパにアルバイトをしながら、ついには五大陸最高峰の全てを登頂する話、さらには南極大陸単独横断などの話が収められています。
私がこの本を読んだのは、植村さんがマッキンリーで消息を絶った1984年のはずなのですが、1986年には、西田敏之さんが植村さんを演じた映画 “植村直己物語”が公開されます。この映画もとてもいい作品でした。
西田敏行さんの演技の素晴らしさに加えて、奥さん役を、倍賞千恵子さんが演じていましたが、このお二人とてもいい俳優さんですね。
ちなみに、なぜそんなに植村さんに自分が引かれるのかを考えてみましたが、私は、どうも所謂普通の一般社会には適合できないけれど、一つのことに自分の人生を捧げている人達に憧れを感じ、共鳴するようです。

When I was a high school student, I read Naomi Uemura’s book, “Betting My Youth on the Mountains,” and became a big fan of his.His adventurous way of life made me yearn for such a life, even though I was at an impressionable age at the time.
In 1984, Mr. Uemura climbed McKinley alone and disappeared on his way down.
When I was 16 years old at the time, I saw the news of Mr. Uemura’s disappearance from McKinley on TV and the news, and became interested in him, which led me to read the aforementioned book.The first edition of this book was published in 1971.
The book contains stories about Mr. Uemura’s background, episodes of how he joined the mountain club at university and became absorbed in the mountains, how he left Japan and went to Europe to work part-time, eventually climbing all the highest peaks of the five continents, and even crossing Antarctica alone.
I read this book in 1984, the year Mr. Uemura disappeared from McKinley, but in 1986, the movie “The Story of Naomi Uemura,” in which Toshiyuki Nishida played Mr. Uemura, was released.This movie was also a very good piece of work. In addition to Toshiyuki Nishida’s wonderful acting, his wife was played by Chieko Baisho, and they are both very good actors.
Incidentally, I’ve been thinking about why I’m so attracted to Mr. Uemura, and it seems that I admire and resonate with people who can’t fit into the so-called normal society, but who dedicate their lives to one thing.
