(English)

My father was very fond of Japanese history and had books on it all over the house.

When I was in elementary school, he bought a magnificent black-covered history book with about 15 volumes, and I vividly remember how happy he was that he could now relearn Japanese history from ancient to modern times.

So, why was my father interested in history? My father passed away a year and a half ago, so I can no longer ask him directly, but one thing he used to tell me was that his father’s side of the family prospered as a samurai family in a place called Oguchi, Kagoshima, and he was very proud of his name, Takeshi (Samurai). My father was very proud of his name, Takeshi (Samurai).

He inherited the family tree from his father, and I remember that he studied history to find out his roots.

I myself was never as passionate about history as my father, but I still think it was thanks to him that history was one of my favorite subjects when I was a student.

Another thing that my father enjoyed was watching westerns and gangster movies.

As long as I can remember, whenever there was a western or gangster movie on TV, he would watch it.

When I was a uni student, I worked part-time at a video rental store, so I would bring home a gangster movie to my father on my way home from work.

After I moved out of my parents’ house, he signed up for cable TV, so after he retired from work, he would watch gangster movies and dramas every day.

As for myself, I started watching foreign films on TV with my father when I was in the early grades of elementary school, and I also developed a fascination with America and English.

There were times when my father and I were at odds with each other, but in the end, he was definitely the person who influenced me the most.
