英書52冊マラソンの8冊目に選んだ、三島由紀夫の春の雪の英訳版を読み終わりました。
この小説は、三島由紀夫の “豊饒の海” 四部作の第一部となる作品で、四部作の4冊目となる天人五衰を書き上げて出版社に入稿した日に、三島は陸上自衛隊市ヶ谷駐屯地で割腹自殺をしています。
ちなみにこの小説は物語の最後に主人公が20歳で亡くなってしまい、次の巻の主人公に輪廻転生していく構成となっているそうです。
三島文学はとても美しい日本語が使われていることが有名ですが、それは英文でも変わらず、気持ちよく音読することができました。
ただ、大正時代の華族の子女の報われない恋愛という設定に共感できず、特に主人公の何の苦労なく育ったからこその我儘な行動や言動に嫌気さえ感じてしまいました。
三島由紀夫という人は自分の美学をしっかり持っていてそれを突き通したというイメージを持っていますが、もしこの春の雪を恋愛小説として読むとすると文章は美しいものの、主人公に共感できなかったので物語を楽しめなかったという感想になります。
ただ大正時代の日本の文化や華族の生活に関する英単語を学べたのは良かったと思っています。
年初からここまで読んだ8冊は全てフィクション（小説）なので、9冊目は、オランダ人の歴史家、ジャーナリストが書いたノンフィクションの本である、ヒューマンカインドという本を選びました。
この本も450ページほどありますが、一気に読んでしまいたいと思います。

I have finished reading the English translation of Yukio Mishima’s Spring Snow, which I chose as the eighth book in my 52-book marathon of English books.
This novel is the first part of Yukio Mishima’s “Sea of Fertility” tetralogy, and on the day he finished writing the fourth book of the tetralogy, Tenjin Goshu, and submitted it to the publisher, Mishima committed suicide by ritual suicide at the Ichigaya Camp of the Japan Ground Self Defense Force.
Incidentally, this novel is said to be structured in such a way that the main character dies at the end of the story at the age of 20 and is reincarnated as the protagonist of the next volume.
Mishima literature is famous for its very beautiful Japanese, and this was no different in the English text, which I was able to read aloud with great pleasure.
However, I could not sympathize with the setting of the unrequited love of a child of a noble family in the Taisho era, and I even felt disgusted by the selfish behavior and words and actions of the main character, especially because he grew up without any hardships.
Yukio Mishima has the image of a man who had his own aesthetics and stuck to them, but if I were to read Spring Snow as a love story, I would say that although the writing was beautiful, I did not enjoy the story because I could not sympathize with the main character.
However, I am glad that I was able to learn some English vocabulary related to Japanese culture and the life of the nobility in the Taisho era.
The eight books I have read since the beginning of the year are all fiction, so I decided to read the ninth book, a nonfiction book written by a Dutch historian and journalist.
I chose the ninth book, Human Kind, which is a non-fiction book written by a Dutch historian and journalist. This book is also about 450 pages long, but I would like to read it in one sitting.
英書52冊マラソンの8冊目に選んだ、三島由紀夫の春の雪(Spring Snow)を読み終わりました。三島は40歳の時にこの作品を書いてその5年後に自ら命を絶っています。もしもそのまま生き続けて作品を書いていたらノーベル賞をもらえていただろうという意見があったとのことです。最後まで天命を全うして欲しかったです。
