The Catcher in the Rye

(English)

After “The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett, I read “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger.

Although this novel was written 70 years ago, it is read all over the world as a classic coming-of-age novel and has sold over 60 million copies, which is amazing.

If I had read this novel when I was in my teens or twenties, I might have had a completely different impression of it. If I had read this novel when I was in my teens or twenties, I might have had a completely different impression, and probably would have thrown the book away halfway through.

I think I would have thrown the book away halfway through because I would not have been able to sympathize with the main character, a 17-year-old boy, because of his too negative behavior and way of thinking.

However, as a 52-year-old, I was able to understand the boy’s frustration with adolescence and his dissatisfaction with society and the deceptions of everyone around him, so I was able to continue reading.

The second half of the story, when the main character goes to see his sister, the only one he has opened up to, and goes to the zoo with her, is the climax of the story, and also the part where the main character sees a ray of light, and it was very heartwarming to read.

By the way, my sister told me, “Your brother doesn’t like everything in the world. Don’t you like at least one thing in the world? When my sister asks me, “Don’t you like everything in the world?

“Anyway, I have a big field of rye and stuff, and I can see all these little kids playing some kind of game. There are thousands of kids. And there’s nobody around – and by nobody, I mean adults – except for me. And I’m standing on the edge of a dangerous cliff. My job is to catch the kids if anyone is about to fall off the cliff – I mean, they won’t look where they are going when they are running. That’s when I have to come running out of nowhere and grab the kid. That’s all I have to do all day, isn’t it? I want to be the catcher in the rye, that kind of thing. I know it’s silly. I know it’s silly, but it’s the only thing I really want to be. I know it’s silly, but it’s the only thing I really want to be.

It is from this scene that the author gave the title “The Catcher in the Rye”. Incidentally, the Japanese translation is a mistranslation of the original, which would be “The Catcher in the Rye.

The story in the rye is, of course, an imaginary story of the main character, but by using this metaphorical expression, I thought the author was expressing the thoughts of a boy on the verge of adulthood, protecting pure and innocent children from dirty adults and society.
