私の尊敬する実業家で教育家でもある、堀義人さんが、新聞のコラムで、人生最大の娯楽は学びであると書いていらっしゃるのをみて強く感銘を受けました。
堀さんはご自身のことを、”人生を楽しむことの天才”と呼んでおられますが、仕事一徹の真面目タイプではなく、遊びの達人、周りを巻き込むことが上手なネットワーキングの達人でもおられますが、心底すごいな思うのは、その尽きることのない知的好奇心で、いつも何か新しいことにチャレンジされて、学ばれている姿です。
その堀さんは、人生の楽しみは三つに分類できると仰っていて、一つ目は享楽的、刹那的な楽しみ。二つ目は社会的な楽しみ。つまり人的ネットワークを広げていくこと。そして最後三つ目の楽しみが学ぶことの楽しみ。そして、この学ぶことの楽しみこそ、最大のエンターテインメントだと語っていらっしゃいます。
私自身、特に50代になってから、残りの自分の人生でやりたいことはなんだろうと考え、至った結論は、自分が興味のある、得意な分野でどこまで極められるか試してみたいということでした。
それが、自分がこの世に生まれて、あとやり残していることだと直感的に感じたのです。
これは、私は昔から、その分野に秀でている人を見ると尊敬の念を抱かずにはいられず、憧れの対象とみることが多くありました。
特に自分より多くのことを知っていたり、その膨大な知見や説得力のある話を聞くと心底凄いと思う傾向があったのです。つまり、自分は知的好奇心に強い関心を持っていたということになります。
そして、50代になった今、知的好奇心を満たすために、残りの人生をかけて学び、自分を成長させ、極めていくステージに入ったと思っています。
学びこそ、人生最大の娯楽だ。
そう胸を張って言えるまで頑張ってみたいと思います。

I was strongly impressed by a newspaper column by Mr. Yoshito Hori, a businessman and educator whom I respect, in which he wrote that the greatest pastime in life is learning.
Mr. Hori calls himself a “genius at enjoying life.” He is not a serious person who works all the time, but he is a master of fun and a master of networking who is good at getting others involved. What I find truly amazing is the way he is always challenging himself to learn something new with his never-ending intellectual curiosity.
Mr. Hori says that the pleasures of life can be divided into three categories: the first is hedonistic and momentary pleasures. The second is social enjoyment. The second is social enjoyment, which is the expansion of human networks. And the third and final enjoyment is the enjoyment of learning. The third and final enjoyment is the enjoyment of learning, and this enjoyment of learning is the greatest entertainment.
I myself, especially in my fifties, have been thinking about what I want to do with the rest of my life, and I have come to the conclusion that I want to see how far I can go in the fields that I am interested in and good at.
I felt intuitively that this was the one thing I had left undone since I was born into this world.
This is because I have always admired people who excel in their field, and I often look up to them with admiration.
I have always had a tendency to respect and admire people who excel in their field, especially when they know more than I do, and when I hear their vast knowledge and persuasive stories. In other words, I had a strong interest in intellectual curiosity.
And now that I am in my 50s, I believe I have entered a stage in my life where I will spend the rest of my life learning, developing and mastering myself in order to satisfy my intellectual curiosity.
Learning is the greatest pastime in life.
I would like to do my best until I can say so with pride.
