今働いている会社に転職してから、サービスの委託契約をしているサプライヤーとのビジネスレビューで日本人の方の英語のプレゼンを聞く機会が増えました。
そして、この10年間で、グローバルなビジネス環境でしっかりと通用する英語力を身につけた日本人が増えていることを実感しています。
例えば、ヨーロッパに拠点を置き、グローバル展開しているサプライヤー企業の北京オフィスに所属している日本人の方で、日本担当として、英語でビジネスレビューをプレゼンするという場面がありました。まだ30代くらいの方だと思うのですが、日本語はもちろんネイティブですが、中国語も完璧、そして英語もばっちりのトライリンガルの方で、中国の大学に進学して中国語を習得して、そのまま中国で外資系の会社に就職したそうです。
他にも、国内最大手のBPO(ビジネス・プロセス・アウトソーシング）のサプライヤーで働き、ビジネスレビューを堂々と英語でこなし、質疑応答もしっかりとできる彼女は、話を聞いてみると、海外に出ることなく、日本でずっと英語を勉強してきたと言っていました。
私自身、新卒で外資系の会社に入ってから、海外生活10年以上、外資系企業で30年間、英語を武器に戦ってきましたが、取引会社のまだ30代の日本人の方のきれる英語を聞くとその優秀さにただただ凄いと思ってしまいます。
ただ英語が喋れるだけでなく、英語で喋るためのロジックや効果的なプレゼン能力も身につけているので、どこへ行っても通用するだろうなと感嘆せずにはいられません。
グローバルなビジネスの環境で活躍できる日本人がどんどん増えてくることは嬉しいことですが、私自身もまだまだ英語を上手くなりたいと、毎日奮闘しているところです。
これからは、こうした優秀な若い人たちに絡んでいって、自分の一緒に成長していけるよう、若い人の胸を借りるつもりで頑張りたいと思います。

Since moving to the company I now work for, I have had more opportunities to listen to English presentations by Japanese people during business reviews with suppliers with whom we have service outsourcing contracts.
And over the past 10 years, I have noticed that more and more Japanese people have acquired English language skills that can be used well in a global business environment.
For example, there was a situation where a Japanese person who belongs to the Beijing office of a supplier company based in Europe and expanding globally, and is in charge of Japan, had to present a business review in English. She is a native Japanese speaker, of course, but she also speaks perfect Chinese and is a trilingual person with a perfect command of English.
Another person, who works for one of the largest BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) suppliers in Japan, and who can do business reviews in English and answer questions in English, told me that she had studied English all her life in Japan without ever going abroad.
I myself have been living overseas for more than 10 years since I entered a foreign-affiliated company as a new graduate, and have been competing in foreign-affiliated companies for 30 years using English as my weapon.
I can’t help but marvel at the fact that they not only speak English, but have also acquired the logic and effective presentation skills to speak in English, which will be useful wherever they go.
I am happy that more and more Japanese people are able to play an active role in the global business environment, but I myself am still struggling every day to become better at English.
From now on, I would like to get involved with these talented young people and do my best with the intention of borrowing from their chests so that I can grow together with them.
取引先に英語の上手な若い人が増えてきたことを実感しています。お話を聞いてみると帰国子女ではなくて日本で英語の勉強をしてきた方が多くて応援したくなります。そして、まだ自分も負けていられないという気持ちを持てることが嬉しくなりました。
