私は自分の言うのも何ですが、これまでの人生とても運が良かった思っています。
例えば、私が就職活動をしていた年はまだバブルが弾ける直前で就職市場は完全に売り手市場で、複数の企業から内定を取りつけるのも普通のことでした。その後バブルが弾けて、私が入社した企業も、数年後には新卒採用を凍結してしまったので私はラッキーでした。
次にラッキーだったのは、日本が失われた10年と言われることになる時期にちょうど日本を脱出して、海外に出られたこともタイミングが良かったと思っています。これも、たまたま会社が、アジア各国にあったオペレーションセンターを、オーストラリアのシドニーに移管するプロジェクトに参加して、そのまま移住できたことで、その後の自分の人生が決まったように思っています。
そして海外で10年以上過ごした後、日本に帰国して、今の会社に転職したのも最高のタイミングでした。転職したのは、2012年の4月だったのですが、そこからの10年で、会社は時価総額世界一の企業になり、株価は私が入社した時から15倍近く上がり、その恩恵を受けることができました。
もちろん、ここまでくるのに紆余曲折がなかったわけではありませんが、私が強調したいのは、これらの決断は、自分から強く望んだ結果と言うよりも、向こうからたまたまその機会がやってきて、それを自分はただ受け入れただけだと思っています。
それらの経験から、運を掴むためには、人生の選択肢を排除しないで、新しい経験や挑戦をどんどん積極的に受け入れていくことが最も大切なのではないかと実感しています。
新しいことを受け入れて、積極的にいろいろ挑戦していくことで、色々な失敗もしますし、続かないこともあると思います。それでも、それらの経験が、いつかどこかで役に立つことがあると思うのです。その時に、人は自分は運が良いと思うかも知れませんが、実はそれも昔蒔いた種が実ってそれを刈り取っているだけなのではないでしょうか。
ということで、これからも自分の人生に期待して、向こうからやってくる運をどんどんと摘み取っていければいいなと思っています。

I can’t speak for myself, but I have been very lucky in my life so far.
For example, the year I was job hunting was just before the bubble economy burst, and the job market was completely a seller’s market, so it was normal to get job offers from multiple companies. I was lucky because the bubble burst and the company I joined froze hiring new graduates a few years later.
The next lucky thing was that I was able to escape Japan and go abroad just in time for what would become known as Japan’s lost decade, which I also consider to have been good timing. It just so happened that the company was involved in a project to transfer operation centers that had been located in various Asian countries to Sydney, Australia, and I was able to move there directly, which I believe determined the rest of my life.
It was also the best timing for me to return to Japan after spending more than 10 years overseas and change jobs at my current company. I changed jobs in April 2012, and in the 10 years since then, the company has become the world’s largest company by market capitalization, with a share price that has increased nearly 15 times since I joined, and I have been able to reap the benefits of this growth.
Of course, it was not without twists and turns to get to this point, but what I want to emphasize is that these decisions were not the result of my own strong desire, but rather, they were the result of an opportunity that happened to present itself to me and I simply accepted it.
From these experiences, I have realized that the most important thing to do in order to get lucky is not to eliminate any options in life, but to actively accept new experiences and challenges as they come along.
By accepting new things and actively trying various challenges, I believe that I will make many mistakes and that there will be times when I will not be able to continue. Nevertheless, I believe that those experiences will be useful somewhere someday. At that time, people may think they are lucky, but in fact, I think that is just another seed that was sown in the past that has borne fruit and we are reaping the benefits of it.
Therefore, I hope that I can continue to have high expectations for my life and keep picking off the luck that comes to me from the other side.
運を掴むためには、新しい経験や挑戦をどんどん積極的に受け入れていくことで人生の選択肢を広げていくことが重要ではないでしょうか。この考え方のお陰で53歳になった今でも夢や目標に向かって色々な挑戦ができているのだと思います。
