私が、社会人になったときに、英語を仕事の武器にしたいと思うきっかけになった方に、松本亨さんと松本道弘さんがいます。
松本亨さんは、英語教育の大家で、”英語と私”という先生ご自身の英語学習の体験を綴った本は、私にとってバイブルで何度も読み返した記憶があります。この本は1958年に出版された本で、先生も1979年に亡くなっているので、生前の先生のお顔を拝見することは叶いませんでした。
私にとってのもう一人の英語の師匠は、松本道弘さんで、この3月にお亡くなりなったことを知りました。
松本道弘さんは、海外に出ることなく、日本で英語を勉強され、駐日アメリカ大使館の同時通訳者や、NNK教育テレビの上級英語講座の講師まで勤められました。
私が先生に最も影響されたのは、英語学習を武道のように道と捉えて、英語の勉強は武者修行、そして、いつも刀のように斬れる英語、つまり、ネイティブに通用する英語を目指していらっしゃったからです。
先生には、私がオーストラリアのシドニーに住んでいるときに、在豪日本人向けに英語道の講演をされたときにお会いすることができ、直接質問をさせていただいたのは今でも良い思い出となっています。
その時、先生は既に60歳は超えていらっしゃったと思いますが、あれから20年以上、英語学習の最前線で、斬れる英語、使える英語を広めるために活動されていて、最近もYouTubeで先生の動画をよく見ていました。
私も先生と比べたら、まだまだ鼻垂れ小僧も同然ですが、先生と同じ歳になるまで生きられるのであればあと30年はあるので、先生の背中を追いかけていきたいと思います。

When I entered the workforce, Toru Matsumoto and Michihiro Matsumoto were two of the people who inspired me to use English as a weapon in my professional life.
Toru Matsumoto is a great English educator, and his book “English and Me,” in which he describes his own experiences in learning English, is my bible, and I remember reading it over and over again. This book was published in 1958, and he passed away in 1979, so I never got to see him in person.
Another English teacher for me was Michihiro Matsumoto, whom I learned passed away this past March.
Michihiro Matsumoto studied English in Japan without ever going abroad. He worked as a simultaneous interpreter at the U.S. Embassy in Japan and even taught an advanced English course on NNK Educational TV. What influenced me the most about Sensei was that he viewed English study as a path, like martial arts, and English study as warrior training, and he always strived for English that could cut like a sword, in other words, English that could be used by native speakers.
I had the pleasure of meeting Sensei when I was living in Sydney, Australia, when he gave a lecture on the English Way to Japanese people living in Australia, and I still have good memories of asking him questions directly.
I think he was already over 60 years old at the time, but for more than 20 years since then, he has been at the forefront of English language learning, working to promote English that can be used and cut through, and I have been watching his videos on YouTube a lot recently.
Compared to him, I am still a snot-nosed little boy, but if I can live to be the same age as him, I have another 30 years to live, so I would like to follow his back.
英語道を提唱して、斬れる英語を日本人に広めてきた松本道弘さん。勝手に私の英語の師匠と慕っておりましたが、3月に82歳でお亡くなりになられました。生前に一度お会いできたのは良い思い出です。これからも先生の背中を追いかけて英語道を突っ走っていきます。
