吉田松蔭

日本を変えた偉人として名前が上がる、代表的な歴史上の人物に坂本龍馬がいますが、器の大きさでは、引けを取らない人物に、吉田松陰がいます。

この二人の人物像を語るエピソードに、黒船が横須賀湾にやってきた時の、二人の対照的な反応があります。

坂本龍馬は、”黒船が来た、私たちは変わらなくてはいけない、日本を変えるんだ”、という反応であった一方で、吉田松蔭は、小舟で黒船に近づき、”自分を黒船に載せて欲しい”と頼んだという嘘のような本当の話があるそうです。 

坂本龍馬の、このままでは日本の存続が危うい、日本を変えなくてはいけないと言う意識も、吉田松陰の、黒船を作った国がどのような科学技術を持っているのか見てみたいという好奇心による行動も、幕末の日本には必要だったのかも知れませんが、私は、吉田松陰の大胆な行動力に強い憧れを抱いてしまいます。

坂本龍馬は、その志半ばで、33歳の時に暗殺されますが、吉田松陰は、龍馬より更に若い、29歳の時に死罪により命を落としてしまいます。

僅か29年しか生きれなかった松蔭ですが、彼が残した英知は、彼の死後160年以上立った今でも、私たちに多くのことを教えてくれます。

松蔭の言葉

道の精なると精ならざると、業の成ると成らざるとは、志の立つと、立たざるとに在るのみ (みちのせいなるとせいならざると、ぎょうのなるとならざるととは、こころざしのたつとたたざるとにあるのみ) 

解釈 
道理に精通しているか否か、仕事や勉強がうまくいくか否かは、心に目指すところがきちんと定まっているか否か、つまり志が あるか否かによる

Ryoma Sakamoto is one of the most famous historical figures who changed Japan, but one person who is second to none in terms of size is Shoin Yoshida.

One of the episodes that illustrates the personalities of these two men is their contrasting reactions when the black ships arrived in Yokosuka Bay.

Ryoma Sakamoto’s reaction was, “The black ships are here, we must change, we must change Japan,” while Shoin Yoshida approached the black ships in a small boat and asked them to put him on board. There is a true story that seems to be a lie. 

Sakamoto Ryoma’s awareness that the survival of Japan was at stake and that Japan needed to change, and Yoshida Shoin’s curiosity to see what kind of science and technology the country that built the black ships possessed may have been necessary for Japan at the end of the Edo period, but I have a strong admiration for Yoshida Shoin’s boldness of action. I have a strong admiration for the boldness of Yoshida Shoin.

Ryoma Sakamoto was assassinated when he was 33 years old, but Shoin Yoshida was even younger than Ryoma, dying of a capital crime at the age of 29.

Although Shoin lived only 29 years, the wisdom he left behind still has much to teach us more than 160 years after his death.

To be or not to be the best of one’s path, to do or not to do one’s work, lies only in the rising or falling of one’s will. 

Interpretation 

Whether or not you are well versed in reason, whether or not your work or study will be successful depends on whether or not you have a clear goal in mind, that is, whether or not you have aspirations.
