(English)

It seems as if I have lived for more than half a century since I was born into this world, but on the other hand, I also feel as if it has passed in the blink of an eye.

However, as my life has passed the halfway point, I suddenly feel a sense of impatience when I think that I do not have that much time left to challenge new things or to move freely.

What I should do is to use the time I have left for my dreams and goals so as not to waste it.

Although we know this, one annoyance after another comes up, and what occupies our minds are things that we cannot answer even if we think about them, or problems that we have no control over.

Also, in today’s information-overloaded society, too much information may be one of the causes of people’s problems.

Therefore, I chose “Walden; or Life in the Woods” by Henry David Thoreu as the 29th book in the 52-book English book challenge, because I wanted to touch upon a time when there were no cell phones, no Internet, and for that matter, no TV or telephone. The book was written by author Thoreau.

The book will be a memoir of the self-sufficient life the author Thoreau led in a cabin around Walden Pond for two years.

Thoreau himself died 160 years ago, and the book was written in 1854, the same year that the Treaty of Shimoda and Hakodate were opened and the U.S.-Japan Friendship Treaty was signed between Japan and the United States.

Thoreau was also famous as a thinker, and this book describes not only Thoreau’s erudition about nature and animals, but also his philosophy of life. He writes that through this life in the forest, he came to the idea that human hardships are created by the complexity of human life and life itself.

Incidentally, the photo used in the eye-catching image is a restored interior room of Thoreau’s forest house.

I wondered if he was living what we now call a minimalist lifestyle.

I myself would like to throw away many unnecessary things and thoughts for the rest of my life, and pursue only what is truly important.
