最近、テレビの全録レコーダーのハードディスクが壊れ、またタブレットの電源が入らなくなり不便を強いられることになりました。
なくなって初めて、自分の生活の中にテレビやタブレットが必需品であることに気づくことになりましたが、これを機会に、できるだけテレビや動画を見ている時間を減らして、その分もっと英語の勉強の時間に充てたいと思うきっかけにもなりました。
私自身子供の頃から本を読むのが好きで、新潮文庫の100冊を片っ端から読んだりしていた時期もありましたが、今の時代のように動画やゲーム、SNSなどの娯楽があったら、そこまで読書にハマっていなかったと思います。
今の若い人は、2時間程度の映画ですら倍速にして観ると聞きますが、一冊読み終えるのに十数時間もかかるような本を読むことはないのでしょうか。それとも本の要約チャンネルのような動画を見て終わりでしょうか。
そんなことを書いているうちに、私自身年初から始めた英書52冊チャレンジのことが頭に過りました。
今年も残りがわずかとなりましたが、目標の52冊読破には程遠く、今30冊目の本を読んでいるところです。それでも30冊を読み終えるのには膨大な時間を使っています。
実際どれくらいの時間を使っているのだろうと思い調べてみたのですが、30冊の総ページ数が8,976ページとなりました。1ページあたりの平均単語数が300単語だとすると、私の英語レベルだと、1分間に160 wpm (word per minute)の読書スピードになるので、8,976ページを読むのに(全単語数が2,692,800単語だとして）280時間 (16,830分)を費やした計算となります。
ちなみに、読破した30冊のうち、最もページ数が少なかったのが、サン＝テグジュペリの星の王子さまの39ページ、最もページ数が多かったのが、スティーブン・キングの長作スタンドの1,325ページでした。
12月も残り2週間ほどになり、残念ながら目標の52冊（1週間1冊のペース)は達成できそうにありませんが、来年再チャレンジして、来年こそは52冊を読破しようと思います。

Recently, the hard disk of my TV’s full-record recorder broke, and I was also forced to suffer the inconvenience of my tablet not being able to turn on.
Only after it was gone did I realize that TV and tablets are necessities in my life, but this was also an opportunity for me to spend as little time as possible watching TV and videos, and to devote that time more to studying English.
I myself have loved reading books since I was a child, and there was a time when I would read every one of the 100 books in the Shincho Bunko collection, but if there were videos, games, social networking sites, and other forms of entertainment like we have today, I don’t think I would have been that into reading.
I hear that young people today watch even 2-hour movies at double speed, but do they ever read a book that takes more than a dozen hours to finish? Or do they end up watching videos like the book summary channel?
As I write this, I am thinking about the 52-book English book challenge that I started at the beginning of this year.
I am now on my 30th book, and I am still a long way from my goal of reading 52 books this year. I am currently reading my 30th book. Still, it is taking me a lot of time to finish reading 30 books.
I looked up the total number of pages in the 30 books to see how much time I actually spent.
Assuming that the average word count per page is 300 words, my reading speed is 160 wpm (words per minute) at my English level, which means that I spent 280 hours (16,830 minutes) to read 8,976 pages (assuming the total word count is 2,692,800 words). (16,830 minutes) to read the book.
