ボブ・ウッドワード氏の最新刊、ドナルド・トランプ氏を題材にした二冊目の本となる、”RAGE”を読了しましたのでレビューしてみます。
ウッドワード氏は、アメリカでは知らない人がいないくらいの著名人で、1972年に起こった、当時の大統領であったリチャード・ニクソン氏が失脚することになった、ウォーターゲート事件の政治スキャンダルを暴いたワシントンポストの記者の一人で、後に、”大統領の陰謀”というタイトルの映画で、ロバート・レッドフォードが演じたのが彼となります。
ウッドワード氏は、その後も、ジャーナリズムの仕事を続けて、ニクソン大統領から、今回のトランプ大統領を含む９人の大統領に関しての著作があります。
最新作である、”RAGE”を書く前に、こちらもトランプ大統領のことを書いた、”FEAR”という著作もあるのですが、この二冊の大きな違いは、前作は、大統領の周りの人からインタービューをした結果をまとめたものであるのに対して、今作は、トランプ大統領への17回に渡る直接のインタビューの結果をまとめた本であることです。
ちなみに、トランプ大統領がインタービューを受けた理由として、FEARでは、言いたい放題のことを書かれたので、今回は自分が真実を語ることで、自分により公平で公正な内容にしてくれるだろうという期待があってのことだそうです。
本の内容は、前半は、トランプ政権の主要ポストの任命、解任劇、そして後半は、北朝鮮の金主席との一連のやりとり、コロナウィルスのトランプ氏の対応や、その後に控えている大統領選に関する話にシフトしていきます。この本で一番面白かったのは、トランプ氏がインタビューで語った言葉を、そのまま書き写しているので、会話の生々しさや、トランプ氏の思考がビンビンと伝わってきて、一切飽きることなく読み進めていけることです。これは、トランプ氏だけでなく、その側近たちの言葉もインタビューで語れれた言葉そのものを読むことができます。
ところで、トランプ氏が望んだように、この本で、トランプ氏は公正で公正な扱われ方をしているのでしょうか。
答えはイエスだと思います。
そして、ウッドワード氏が、17回に渡るインタビューの結論として、この本の最後に残した、トランプ大統領の評価は、
Trump is the wrong man for the job でした。
ウッドワード氏の忖度の全くないペンは、リアルトランプ大統領を知ることができます。とてもお勧めの本でした。

I’ve just finished reading Bob Woodward’s latest book, “RAGE,” his second book about Donald Trump, and I’m reviewing it.
Mr. Woodward, who is no stranger to America, was one of the Washington Post reporters who uncovered the Watergate political scandal in 1972 that led to the downfall of then-president Richard Nixon, and later He was played by Robert Redford in a movie titled “All the President’s Men.”
Woodward has since continued his work in journalism and has written about nine presidents, including this one, Trump, from President Nixon.
Before writing his most recent book, RAGE, he also wrote FEAR, which is also about President Trump, but the big difference between the two books is that the previous book was a compilation of interviews from people around the president, whereas this one is a series of 17 interviews with President Trump. It is a book that is the result of a direct interview.
Incidentally, President Trump’s reason for the interview is that he was given all the things he wanted to say in FEAR, and he hoped that this time he would tell the truth and make it more fair and equitable for him to do so.
The first half of the book shifts from the first half of the book, which is the appointment and removal drama of key Trump administration posts, to the second half of the book, which shifts to a series of interactions with North Korean President Kim, Trump’s response to the coronavirus and the presidential election that will follow.
What I found most interesting about the book is that it is transcribed verbatim from Trump’s words in the interview, so the rawness of the conversations and Trump’s thoughts are binned and you can read through the book without getting bored at all. This is a great way to read the very words spoken in the interview, not only by Trump, but also by his aides.
By the way, is Trump being treated fairly and justly in this book, as he wanted to be treated?
I think the answer is yes.
And Woodward’s assessment of President Trump at the end of the book, at the conclusion of his 17 interviews, is that
Trump is the wrong man for the job
Mr. Woodward’s utterly un-disciplined pen gives you an insight into the real President Trump. I highly recommend this book.
