(English)

While zapping around YouTube, I happened to have a chance to watch a video of Rira Ikuta, a member of YOASOBI, playing the guitar when she was 14 years old.

I checked on the Internet and found that she started playing guitar when she was in the sixth grade of elementary school, which means that someone had posted a video of her singing on the street on YouTube a couple of years later.

She was 14 years old, which means she was in her second or third year of junior high school, and her clear voice and volume were impressive. No wonder she later became a professional singer.

On a different note, in the summer high school baseball tournament, the elite young players from each prefecture are competing fiercely in the Koshien Stadium. Some of them may become active in Japan’s professional baseball or even in the MBL.

When I see these young, sparkling talents, I feel really dazzled and feel a sense of youth, but at the same time, it reminds me of my high school days when I was a nobody and agonized over what I could do.

By the way, I looked up how many musicians and professional athletes there are in Japan, and according to the 2000 census, 22,696 people answered their occupation as a musician. That’s 0.017% of the population. On the other hand, in the 2015 survey, there were 11,230 professional athletes, so this is even lower at 0.008% of the population.

In other words, the number of people who can make a living as a musician or a professional athlete is very small, and it seems to be a group of people who are not only blessed with talent, but also those who really love it and are willing to work hard, and then get lucky.

Nevertheless, everyone has dreamed of becoming an athlete or a musician at some point in their childhood. And more than 99.99% of us will never be able to make that dream come true. Still, it may be our only mission to sublimate those unfulfilled dreams into another form and enjoy life in our own way so that we can shine.

In my case, one of the things that I have longed for since I was a child, and that I continue to be passionate about even after turning 50, is studying English. Now that I have reached this point, I would like to enjoy studying English until I die.
