この歳になっても英語への情熱は増すばかりで、自分にとっての英語道は終わることはなく、死ぬまで英語を勉強し続けるのだろうと思っています。
英語の習得を武術や芸術の道を極めることに喩えて、英語道と言い始めたのは、私も尊敬する松本道弘さんが初めてだと思いますが、私がシドニーに住んでいた時に松本さんの講演に行かせていただき質問をさせていただいのはとても良い思い出です。
私には他にも勝手に英語の師と仰いでいる方がいますが、グロービスの創業者であり学長である堀義人さんは、英語の教育者ではなくビジネスの場で颯爽と英語を使っている姿に感銘を受けて、ずっとフォローさせていただいていいます。堀さんにも、グロービスのMBA説明会の時に質問させていただいことがありました。
今、英語の達人として気になっている方は、水野弘道さんです。Wikipediaには、
イギリスのプライベート・エクイティ・ファンドであるコラーキャピタルのパートナーや、年金積立金管理運用独立行政法人理事兼最高投資責任者、経済産業省関与等を務めた。現在、国際特使、テスラ取締役。
とすごい経歴が紹介されていますが、ここに挙げた方々に私が崇拝するのは、皆さん帰国子女ではなくて日本にいながらここまでの英語の力をつけられたことに尊敬の念を抱くからです。
英語なんて英語圏の人なら誰でも喋っていると言えばその通りです。
何のためにそこまで英語を勉強しているのかと聞かれると答えに詰まってしまいます。
英語なんてコミュニケーションの道具に過ぎない。大事なのは英語を使って何をするかだ。正しいことだと思います。
それでも、英語は私にとって自分の青春であり、仲間であり、武器であり、やりがいであり、もう理屈を超えた存在になっています。
今日も英語の達人目指して英語に触れていきたいと思います。

Even at this age, my passion for English has only increased, and I believe that my English path will never end and that I will continue to study English until the day I die.
I think Mr. Michihiro Matsumoto, whom I also respect, was the first person to start calling learning English the “English Way,” likening it to mastering martial arts or the arts. I have fond memories of going to Mr. Matsumoto’s lectures when I was living in Sydney and asking him questions.
I have been following Mr. Yoshito Hori, the founder and president of GLOBIS, since I was impressed by his dashing use of English in a business environment rather than as an English educator. I had a chance to ask Mr. Hori a question at a GLOBIS MBA information session.
I’m currently interested in Hiromichi Mizuno, an English language expert who, according to Wikipedia
Mr. Mizuno has been a partner of Coller Capital, a British private equity fund, a director and chief investment officer of the Independent Administrative Institution for Pension Fund Management, and a member of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Currently, he is an international envoy and a director of Tesla.
The reason why I admire these people so much is because they are not returnees and I respect the fact that they have been able to acquire such a high level of English skills while living in Japan.
It is true to say that everyone in English-speaking countries speaks English.
If you ask me why I am studying English so much, I am at a loss for an answer.
English is just a tool for communication. What’s important is what you do with it. I think this is right.
Nevertheless, English is my youth, my companion, my weapon, my reward, and it has become more than just a theory to me.
I would like to keep in touch with English today, aiming to become a master of English.
